Last Week's Strip: "Cart Talk"

Sorry about that weird password login that replaced my site for a couple days last week. Things went a little haywire when my web host reset my FTP credentials. I do appreciate the many and varied emails I received about the problem.

This cartoon is about a pet peeve of Mr. Slowpoke's and mine. I wonder how many of these obnoxious cart criminals are the same people who yammer about "personal responsibility." Probably a few.

I'm still traveling, so posting will be rare. But you can follow my occasional Euro-tweets here or through my Facebook page.

More on the Patriot Plan

Reader Tom checks in with some interesting thoughts on last week's cartoon suggesting ways of selling the public option:

Your cartoon suggesting the "Patriot Health Plan" nailed it. I think a lot of the shrieking knuckle-draggers start by opposing health care because they consider health care to be sissyfied, and then work backward to find justifications for that.

About Patriotic Health Care: An argument I've been trying to make one idiot at a time is that health care is also a military prepardeness issue. I read somewhere that the first government health care system was actually set up by Fredrick the Great of Prussia to ensure he would have enough healthy soldiers. In the Iraq war, some 40 percent of the National Guard and Army reserve soldiers called up for duty were found to need remedial dental care. Well, of course, people join the Guard and the Reserve to get a little extra dough (I did, in college and as a an underpaid newspaper reporter). And during World War II ("the good war") an astounding 50 percent of the men called to service were found to be unfit for military service! No wonder, after 12 years of Depression-level health care.

Agreed that there's a gendered aspect to all of this; it's not unlike the phenomenon of some guys refusing to wear seatbelts because caring about safety seems "feminine."

Also, whenever I went to my doctor's office back in rural Virginia (where the medical care itself was good), I always saw people in really bad shape -- clearly not getting preventative dental care, among other things. Seems strange in the richest country in the world.
